TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen is a German omnisport club from the city of Leverkusen . With around 10,000 members (as of 2009), it is one of the largest sports clubs in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The club was founded in 1904 as Turn- und Spielverein der Farbenfabriken formally Friedrich Bayer & Co. as a corporate sports club. In the 1920s, the government decided that all sports and gymnastics clubs should be separated from each other and so Sportvereinigung Bayer 04 Leverkusen and Turn- und Spielverein 04 Bayer Leverkusen were created . In 1984 both associations united to TSV Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The football department, which is best known, became independent in 1999 as the GmbH Bayer 04 Leverkusen . This club traditionally plays in the red-black club colors as a continuation of the old sports club. The other departments have red and white as club colours.
