Kodera is located on the southern coast of Hyogo Prefecture, facing the Seto Inland Sea. The town is known for its beautiful beaches, including Akashi Kaikyo Beach and Kodera Beach. Kodera is also home to a number of historical sites, including the Kodera Castle ruins and the Kodera Shrine.

Kodera was originally a small fishing village, but it grew in importance in the Edo period (1603-1868) as a port town. The town was also a major center for the production of sake and soy sauce.
