The Federal Office of Justice ( BfJ ) is a higher federal authority which, as a central office, has been responsible for register tasks since 2007 (theFederal Public Prosecutor General at the Federal Court of Justice was previously responsible and tasks relating to international legal transactions. Furthermore, the prosecution of certain administrative offenses is concentrated at the BfJ. It is subject to the technical supervision of the Federal Ministry of Justice (BMJ) and has more than 1200 employees.  The office of the BfJ is in the Federal City of Bonn .

The Federal Office of Justice was founded on January 1, 2007 on the basis of the law of December 17, 2006 establishing and regulating the tasks of the Federal Office of Justice.

In international treaties and in EU legal acts, there is an increasing obligation for contracting parties and member states to designate a central contact point. Within the framework of the European Judicial Network, a national contact point for cross-border traffic must be indicated. In addition, there was no central federal authority responsible for the monitoring mandated by national laws and for the enforcement of certain requirements. Some of these tasks were previously performed by the Federal Public Prosecutor at the Federal Court of Justice or they were performed directly in the Federal Ministry of Justice. A reorganization and concentration of these areas of responsibility as well as a bundling of administrative activities appeared necessary.
