1972 Uefa European Football Championship
The 1972 UEFA European Football Championship was the fourth edition of the UEFA European Championship, the quadrennial international football championship of Europe organized by UEFA. It was held in Belgium from 14 to 18 June 1972.
The final tournament was contested by four teams, the four semi-finalists from the qualifying competition. The teams were drawn into a single-elimination knockout format, with the winners of the semi-finals meeting in the final.
The West Germany national football team won the tournament, defeating the Soviet Union national football team 3–0 in the final. This was West Germany's first European Championship title.
The tournament was notable for the introduction of the penalty shootout to decide drawn matches. The first penalty shootout in a major international football tournament took place in the semi-final between West Germany and Belgium, which West Germany won 4–2.
